Have you heard about the folk custom called ‘Ghost Month’ in Taiwan? Let me tell you the story, and I believe it is quite similar to Halloween from Western culture…
It’s believed that the arrival of the 7th month of the lunar calendar will open the gate belonging to the underworld. It means ‘good brothers’ (we don’t call them ‘ghosts’) are able to return to the world of living. The time when human beings are so close to good brothers, which is like a Halloween festival to a certain degree. However, we provide them with rich offerings, such as fruit, snacks, canned food, and so on to avoid them ‘entering’ homes.
It’s also noteworthy that there are numerous taboos that we have to follow in the 7th month of the lunar calendar, such as hanging clothes to dry at night, whistling at night, turning your head while hearing someone calling your name, and so on. Geez! I have goose bumps right now when I am typing these taboos. Okay, let’s get back to the topic. Those taboos are believed to keep off disturbing from ’good brothers.’ What do you think? Hehe..
